Maolin is a homeland of the blue crow butterfly (known colloquially as the "purple butterfly"). Every winter, about six million blue crows fly to southern Taiwan under the power of their glider-like purple wings, finding a warm and wind-protected refuge in the valley at the base of Dawu Mountain. Apart from Mexico, which is visited by monarch butterflies in the winter, Maolin is one of only two butterfly wintering areas in the world.

Day1 Maolin National Scenic Area(A part of scenic spots temporarily closed by typhoon effects) ->Maolin Ecological Park ->Duonagao Drawbridge ->Meiya Valley ->Longtou Mountain
During the blue crow wintering season, the Maolin National Scenic Area Administration holds a "Biannual Butterfly Watching Activity." The best time to see the butterflies is in the mornings (8:00~11:00) during the months of December to March. Maolin also welcomes visitors with its world-class natural beauty, and professional guides are available to introduce the many ecological charms of the area. Along Highway 132, en route to the butterfly watching area, you can also see enjoy the local mountain beauty, striking meander cores, and Longtou Mountain (Longtoushan), formed by erosive power of a winding waterway. To complete the journey, you can also visit the Duonagao Drawbridge (Duona High Drawbridge) the highest such span in Taiwan.
